Finally, a "Leaves of Grass" trailer is out starring Ed Norton. I read that it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and was considered a top film by Roger Ebert.

Grey tone and color sketch

I've been trying some new stuff and copying techniques this weekend (James Paick-http://scribblepadstudios.com/home.htm - and Gustave Courbet) to try to get better at both environments and painting in general. Not perfect, but a good start. I'm also working on what Ed Li (Disney Studios) spoke about in a class I took recently, specifically dark over light and light over dark (check out NC Wyeth). I'm finding that you can have a fg, mg and bg, but two of the three should be similar in value. The mg can have more texture or less texture to separate it. Any combination of those seems to me to be a winning formula.

The two sketches took me maybe an hour as I have a baby behind me demanding attention by destroying our apartment, throwing our clothes in the garbage and etc.

The grey scale was done with marker and a General's charcoal white pencil. The color was done in Photoshop using an airbrush for the original Turquoise wash and then a wet brush for the warm compliment (learned that from a James Clyne Gnomon video). The greyscale darks are a 7 for the overall dark value with 8, 9, and 10 used to carve out darker shapes and shadows. The background is marker values of 2, 4, 5 with 5 creating the silouhettes and give me atmospheric perspective. In other sketches I did I used a Faber Castel "F" pen to knock out more, smaller shapes.

The class, "Sketching for Environment" was held at the Concept Design Academy in Pasadena. Cool place, cool people.

Just started boarding on this show. So far it's been the most fun I've had in animation and that's after thirteen years of going in and out of it. I think I'll stick around for a while this time.

A storyboard page for a personal project. I'm having a lot of fun working on this and have been getting input from an industry friend who knows his s%&# better than anyone I know. I mean, I have gone from doing a board that was limited to doing one that has so much more of a cinematic feel to it. Growing is such a great feeling.

I'm working on a personal board geared towards animation. Things are slow right now with the actors still negotiating giving me time to do things like this. Here are a couple of drawings. This is also my first time doing an animation board in Photoshop. No big deal. And ignore the model changes...I'm just getting back up to speed on this one as I was out of the state and then the country for a few weeks.

I was at the Farmer's market the other day and I was inspired by the wrinkles on the face of an old man. I'll probably tweak this drawing a couple of more times before I'm done, but it's pretty much there. I think I'd like to do a series based on monsters and such from old stories and Hollywood films. Kind of embarrassed by my rusty "architecture" writing. Oh, well.

I'm working on another film. I've made a handful of shorts so far and now I've decided to make a feature. Up to page nineteen on the script. I plan to shoot the film mostly "guerrilla" style. Cineme Verite and all that. On the run. When we (myself and the actors) have time.

I've been inspired to do something like this since I read about Christopher Nolan's first feature, "Following" which took a year to complete while shooting on weekends. He shot it for $6,000. No lights. Practical locations, etc. I think it got him "Memento". Not bad.

Soon I'll be buying the Sony EX1 and a Lowell lighting kit. I'll also be buying Final Cut Studio as I have edited all of my films and animatics using that software. It works for me.

Anyway, I've worked on set with a couple of films now and watched closely how DP's and their crews work, so I figure I know enough to be dangerous. I'll also be referring to my copy of "Rebel Without A Crew", "Painting with Light", and "Cinematography". I feel like "The Five C's" is over- rated and my copy is collecting dust. That being said this should be an exciting challenge. Mostly this endeavor comes out of my natural need to "just do it" and who gives a s@#% what people think of whatever comes out of this. Should be interesting.

Everyone wants to draw robots, so I thought I would make a robot, too. By the way, this is for fun. I'm not a designer or a pre-viz guy. I just do storyboards...
I guess this guy lost his arm in a fight. Or maybe he's incomplete. Whatever. I should put some sparks coming out of his arm.

I finished another board job yesterday. I really dig working for myself. I'm just concerned about my arm as I'm waking up in the morning and my hand is really tight. Takes a few minutes to loosen up. Maybe I should start doing Yoga.

I'm quitting "Family Guy" the end of July. Why? Why would someone quit a well paying union job on a popular show to take on sporadic, non-union freelance work?

Because I can. More important, I needed a new challenge. Needed something new to look at. Variety being the spice of life and all.

So, here goes.
